Ingredients to make the sticky rice & black beans

  • 1 cup dry black beans
  • 1⅔ cup sticky rice
  • tsp salt
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp onion powder

Ingredients for toppings:

  • fried onions use as a garnish/topping
  • shredded sweetened coconut
  • sesame salt
  • crushed peanuts

Instructions

  • I like to look through the black beans and remove any unwanted particles.
  • Fill the beans up with water and let them soak overnight.
  • Measure out the sticky rice and give them a rinse. I like to rinse them 3 times.
  • Then fill the rice up with water and let them soak overnight.
  • In the morning, fill the steamer pot with water. Making sure the water doesn't touch the steamer basket on top.
  • Let the water come to a boil.
  • Mix the salt, garlic powder, onion powder into the uncooked sticky rice and black beans. Give it a stir to make sure all the seasonings are well combined.
  • Pour this sticky rice & black beans mixture into the steamer basket on top of the boiling water.
  • Use a hand towel to wrap the lid and put the lid on top of the steamer basket to steam. The towel will catch the water condensation. This prevents the sticky rice from getting soggy.
  • Let the sticky rice & black beans steam until the black beans are soft. Approximately 1.5 hours.
  • After the sticky rice & beans are soft, transfer them to a bowl and add your desired toppings & enjoy!
