Have you ever wondered why a drink costs so much at a coffee shop? Maybe it’s just me being frugal but I’ve always wondered. My favorite drink to get at a local coffee shop is a matcha latte. However, with all the price increases, I just can’t stomach paying coffee shop prices so I went in search for the ingredients to make homemade matcha latte. Let me tell you, it tastes just as good, if not better, than store bought matcha latte, and so much more economical.

What is matcha?
Matcha is a green powder made from the Camellia sinensis plant. This plant also produces other types of tea. The main difference between green tea and matcha is in how it’s grown and processed. In order to make matcha, the plant is grown in the shade before it’s harvested. This gives the plant their distinct characteristics.
What does matcha taste like?
Matcha has a beautiful vibrant green color. It is foamy at the top and has a earthy, bitter taste.
What is in a matcha latte?
The main two ingredients are matcha powder and milk. I’ve found this organic everyday matcha powder at the local grocery store and I’ve been very impressed. Some matcha powder have a fishy, bitter aftertaste to me but this one does not.
Since I’m lactose intolerant, I use almond milk, but you can certainly use any milk you’d like. I’ve made it with oat milk in the past and it also tastes great. There are many different kinds of almond milk. I like to get the kind that is unsweetened to cut down on the amount of added sugar.
The last ingredient is the optional sweetener, honey. I like to add a teaspoon of honey to the mix to give it a slight taste of sweetness. Of course, if you prefer your latte to be sweeter, add more honey.

That’s it, those are the ingredients I use everyday to make my matcha latte. Here’s how I make it…
How to make homemade matcha latte?
I know you’re probably thinking I have one of those fancy matcha whisk that I use to make my matcha latte every morning. No because I don’t like to have single purpose kitchen tools. I just use my compact, personal ninja blender even though it’s meant for making smoothies, it does a wonderful job of blending the matcha powder into the milk. Here’s how I make it…
Homemade Matcha Latte

Materials
- 1 teaspoon matcha powder
- 8 oz almond milk or any milk of your choice
- 1 teaspoon honey more if you want it sweeter

- If you want to serve the matcha latte hot, place the cup into the microwave and heat for 3 minutes then enjoy.
